Listen to this life-changing message from Pastor Mike Plunket about giving!

We believe that giving financially to God is a part of our worship.  Throughout scripture the directive to give is evident, both in the OT and NT. At Risen King we believe everything we have is God’s.  So whether we give 10% today or 50% the next week – it’s all God’s – He can have all of it because He is our source. How can we hold on to what is not ours?  So we ask Him to speak to our hearts how much to give each week and then we step out in faith and obey His voice.  Some can give large amounts and percentages.  Others can give smaller amounts and percentages.  Sometimes God dares us to dream big and give it all.  All we have to do is listen for His leading and follow. We can’t out give God. His blessing clearly follows cheerful and obedient givers.

You may have had a bad experience at a church or with a person in a church trying to coerce you or others to give a regimented 10% and “not cheat God.”  Well, we read Matthew 23:23-24 and don’t agree with using guilt, shame or duty as a means to incite people to give.

“Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness.  These you ought to have done without neglecting the others. You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!”

It’s pretty clear Jesus was strongly against tithing out of a sense of legalism or duty.  We want to tithe as an act of Worship.  We want to be cheerful givers, full of faith and grace – not reluctant, begrudgingly, scared or even prideful  – like the pharisees who legalistically gave their tithe.  The principle of the tithe is evident – we aren’t discounting its Biblical foundations and truths – but tithing was meant as an act of worship, a response filled with gratitude and thanksgiving towards an awesome God who does awesome things.

So – as you attend Risen King, either in person or online, we ask that you would a) recognize that scripture directs us to give b) stay sensitive to His leading c) step out in faith and obedience and d) give freely – free of worry, doubt, fear, unbelief and obligation – and give cheerfully knowing that your God has a limitless abundance of resources and He loves you more than anything on this planet! You’re His child, He wants to provide for you even more than we want to provide for our own children.
